Delivered Speeches

Parent Welcome Speech | September 17, 2005

Good afternoon. My name is David Lawson, and I am a fourth year, graduating senior here at Porter College. I study ancient literatures, with particular emphasis on Middle Egyptian literature. I am a Resident Advisor, and this is my second year as an RA.

I
've been asked to say something about what it's like to be a UCSC student at Porter, so I'll keep it brief. I have never been prouder to be a part of any community as I am to be a part of Porter College. These students and my peers are the most capable, ambitious, and dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure of working with, with the wonderful exception of UCSC's faculty and staff.

E
very parent here should be proud of their child, but we must also remember that we are no longer children, but adults with the power to change the world.

S
o, my word of advice is this: tell your sons and daughters that you love them, and support them unconditionally. College is beginning, and exciting and wonderful things are about to happen.

Thank you.

Oh, the glow of a city...
